Large Naquadah Reactor

(Redirected from Large naquadah reactor)

The Large Naquadah Reactor (LNR) is used for generating power from Naquadah Based Liquid Fuel. This multiblock is first unlocked at ZPM and scales very well up to UIV where it is often replaced with the Dyson Swarm Ground Unit. A single LNR can generate up to 664B EU/t, but that requires the most expensive fuel, booster, and coolant which are NOT easy to obtain or sustain. The higher tiers of fuel (MkIII+) also require the Naquadah Fuel Refinery to craft which has its own challenges.

Spreadsheet: This lets the player easily calculate how many LNRs the player needs per Naquadah Fuel Refinery, the resulting power gain, and the consumption rate of various ingredients: Naquadah Fuel Calculator

Obtaining

The Large Naquadah Reactor can be crafted using an Assembling Line or Advanced Assembly Line. To obtain the Data Stick the player must scan a Naquadah Reactor Mark III in a Scanner.

Construction

The LNR is a 7x8x7 structure that can be quickly and easily built using a Multiblock Structure Hologram Projector. Due to the significant amount of EU/t that it generates, a laser source hatch is practically required to avoid any explosions associated with a full dynamo hatch. A quadruple input hatch or stocking input hatch is also recommended to hold the four different fluid inputs.

Requires:

  • 1 Controller block; front, bottom
  • 121 Radiation Proof Machine Casing
  • 36 Radiation Proof Steel Frame Box
  • 48 Field Restriction Casings
  • 6 Tungstensteel Pipe Casings
  • 1 Dynamo Hatch; any bottom layer casing
  • 1 Maintenance Hatch, any bottom layer casing
  • 1+ Input Hatch, any bottom layer casing
  • 1+ Output Hatch, any bottom layer casing

Wallsharing

The LNR is capable of wallsharing the input hatch, output hatch, and laser source hatch. This can help save on some resources while lasers are still expensive.

Usage

Although seemingly very simple (fuel in / power out), there are some additional features of the LNR that can lead to disastrous consequences if not handled properly:

  • If there is more than ONE type of fuel present, the LNR will explode.
  • If the size of the dynamo is less than what it outputs per tick, the LNR will explode.
  • If the output speed of the dynamo is less than what it outputs per tick, the excess energy will void.[1]
  • If there is not 2400 L/s of liquid air provided, the fuel will void.
  1. This will only occur if the power is backed up from a full LSC or there is limited throughput after the LNR.

Fluid Inputs

The only other mandatory fluid input is the fuel which is typically one of the Naquadah-Based fuels below. The others provide too little EU/t to really be useful for power generation. Thorium Based Liquid Fuel is a good source of Thorium 232 and Praseodymium, but even then a Neutron Activator is better for harvesting byproducts.

Fuel EU/t Time (s) Total EU from 1L
Thorium Based Liquid Fuel 2,200 25.0 1,100,000
Uranium Based Liquid Fuel 12,960 5.0 1,296,000
Plutonium Based Liquid Fuel 32,400 7.5 4,860,000
Naquadah Based Fuel Mk I 975,000 3.0 58,500,000
Naquadah Based Fuel Mk II 2,300,000 3.5 161,000,000
Naquadah Based Fuel Mk III 9,511,000 4.0 760,880,000
Naquadah Based Fuel Mk IV 88,540,000 5.0 8,854,000,000
Naquadah Based Fuel Mk V 399,576,000 8.0 63,932,160,000
Naquadah Based Fuel Mk VI 2,077,795,200 12.0 498,670,848,000

Optionally, a coolant can be provided to increase the efficiency of the fuel. Each of the following fluids multiplies the EU/t of the fuel without increasing the fuel consumption rate or reducing the time of the recipe. Coolant is strictly a benefit to the fuel.

Coolant Multiplier Consumption Rate
IC2 Coolant 1.05x 1000 L/s
Super Coolant 1.50x 1000 L/s
Cryotheum 2.75x 1000 L/s
Tachyon Rich Temporal Fluid 5.00x 1000 L/s

Optionally, a booster can be provided to increase the output power of the LNR. Each of the following fluids multiplies the EU/t of the fuel AND the amount of fuel consumed (ie. 16x means 16L will be consumed instead of 1L). Boosters strictly save on spamming more LNR.

Booster Multiplier Consumption Rate
Molten Caesium 2x 180L/s
Molten Uranium-235 3x 180L/s
Molten Naquadah 4x 20L/s
Molten Atomic Separation Catalyst 16x 20L/s
Spatially Enlarged Fluid 64x 20L/s
