The Bricked Blast Furnace is a multiblock the main purpose of which is getting first steel in the Steam Age. With the bronze plated blast furnace deprecated, the Bricked Blast furnace is your go-to method to create steel until you make an Electric Blast Furnace. Its recipes are listed under the NEI "Primitive Blast Furnace" tab. This is the first machine where pollution may become an issue for some players, as you are likely to build up to 4 (or even more!) blast furnaces due to their slow processing speed; resulting in a gradual build up of pollution if left running constantly for long periods of time. Don't let the pollution discourage you, however, you will be able to make many stacks of steel before the pollution is noticeable.

Note that recipes that use the block form of fuel are typically more efficient; each block is made by compressing 9 fuel items, but often substitutes for 10 recipes (ex. 1 block of coal coke and 20 iron ingots can make 20 steel ingots, 10 coal coke and 20 iron ingots also makes 20 steel ingots).

To create steel, simply add fuel and iron, then wait for quite a while.

The Bricked Blast Furnace can also be used to obtain extra output from metal oxides and sulfates (Pyrite, Magnetite, Cassiterite, etc.). Doing this returns 3 ingots for every 2 dust, however the processing time may reduce the practicality of doing this.

The Bricked Blast Furnace is running

The Bricked Blast Furnace (BBF) is a GregTech multiblock unlocked in the Steam Age. Its recipes are listed under the NEI "Primitive Blast Furnace" tab. It is typically the first source of Steel Ingots, used for LV Machines and High Pressure Steam Age Machines. It can also increase the yield of certain metal oxides and sulfates (Pyrite, Magnetite, Cassiterite, etc.).

Construction

The Bricked Blast Furnace is constructed by laying a 3x3 foundation of the Firebricks followed by hollow ring of Firebricks above it with the Bricked Blast Furnace (Controller) on front center and another two hollow rings of Firebricks above it.

Attention! Top center block of the Bricked Blast Furnace must be empty.

Step 2. Ring with the Bricked Blast Furnace (Controller)
Step 3. Ring of the Firebricks
Step 4. Last layer

The Bricked Blast Furnace can be wallshared. However, it will only allow horizontal wall sharing. The section below explains this in more detail.

The formula for defining quantity of the Firebricks for 1xM versions:

 • N - quantity of the Firebricks
 • M - quantity of the Bricked Blast Furnaces (Controllers)

The formula for defining quantity of the Firebricks for 2xM versions:

 • N - quantity of the Firebricks
 • 2M - quantity of the Bricked Blast Furnaces (Controllers)

Usage

There are 331 recipes in the NEI (ver. 2.5.1) for the Bricked Blast Furnace.

The Bricked Blast Furnace is the only way to obtain steel in the tier 0.5 - Steam. It can also be used to obtain extra output from metal oxides and sulfates (Pyrite, Magnetite, Cassiterite, etc.). Doing this returns 3 ingots for every 2 dust.

Fuels

 • Coal Coke
 • Coal
 • Charcoal
 • Charcoal Dust
 • Coal Dust
 • Coal Powder
 • Cactus Coke
 • Sugar Coke
 • Block of Coal Coke
 • Block of Charcoal
 • Block of Coal
 • Colored Block of Coal

Note that recipes that use the block form of fuel are typically more efficient; each block is made by compressing 9 fuel items, but often substitutes for 10 recipes (ex. 1 block of coal coke and 20 iron ingots can make 20 steel ingots, 10 coal coke and 20 iron ingots also makes 20 steel ingots).

Byproducts

 • Tiny Pile of Ashes
 • Tiny Pile of Dark Ashes
 • Ashes
 • Dark Ashes

 2. Input slot #2
 3. Fuel slot - see full list of useable fuels above
 4. Progress bar - can also be clicked to see all recipes available for the Bricked Blast Furnace
 5. Output slot #1
 6. Output slot #2
 7. Output slot for ashes - a by-product created by all recipes

Pollution

Each BBF (e.g., each controller) produces 200 pollution/s.

Trivia

 • There is lava inside the working Bricked Blast Furnace but it can't be pumped out.
 • You can save 8 Firebricks by sharing the walls of the 2xM version instead of 1xM one.
 • Although in the interface, input slot #1 has an ingot icon and input slot #2 features a dust icon, either slot can be used for either state of material and in some recipes blocks, such as sand, are used.
 • The Steam Age blast furnace of choice used to be the Bronze Plated Blast Furnace, which has since been deprecated.
