Hazards are notable features of world generation that add dangerous features to the landscape. Hazardous landmarks often include monster spawners or are traps by their nature. While potentially dangerous to the unwary, most Hazards are paired with Loot, resources, or are even needed for progression.

Thaumcraft

Tainted Land

Tainted Land is a special biome modifier added by Thaumcraft as part of world generation. Like Eerie and Magical Forest, Tainted Lands overrides the local biome. It actively transforms and spreads tainted blocks, decaying any living or organic matter. Stopped only by water or empty voids. Most natrual Tainted Land biomes will have a Tainted Node somewhere nearby. Contact with tainted blocks or even picking up tainted items can inflict the 'Taint Poison' effect that causes damage over time and can infect mobs it kills, spawning more powerful tainted versions.

Tainted Land is extremely hard to eradicate once established. Crusted Taint is slow to break, and the liquified version Flux Goo needs to be washed away with a water bucket. It can be kept at bay by a line of Silverwood trees with Pure nodes, which will stop the spread, and the natural biome reverted with Ethereal Blooms. However any remaining Fibrous Taint or tainted blocks will reinfect the area if not completely removed.

Webbed Greatwood

Greatwood trees are a fairly common sight, but rarely they may spawn with cobwebs hanging from the lower branches. This is a warning that a nest of Cave Spiders has made this tree their home. Approaching a webbed Greatwood will activate the Cave Spider spawner below its trunk. For the brave or well-equipped, there is also a chest of treasure to loot. These chests contain mostly mid-tier metal ingots and gems.

Hungry Node

Loose blocks, a mysteriously growing crater and mobs being tossed up into the air are all signs of a Hungry Node. This destructive node pulls in and consumes anything that gets within a fifteen block radius, potentially increasing its primal aspects in the process. Entities in contact with a Hungry Node take void damage. There are very few blocks a Hungry Node will not destroy, such as Obsidian and warded blocks. Being mostly invisible except for its effects, the Hungry Node is one of the more dangerous hazards; thankfully it's also one of the rarest. Experienced Thaumaturges can manipulate a captive Hungry Node.

Eldritch Ring

This structure is comprised of an Eldritch Obelisk, with a platform of Obsidian Tile and Obsidian capped with Eldritch Tiles. The center contains a Sinister Node that slowly converts the local biome to Eerie and spawn Infernal Furious Zombies. It may generate with a pair of Crimson Banners and Crimson Cultists or spawn Eldritch Guardians, both hostile.

Obsidian Totem

This small 1x1 pillar of obsidian has a Sinister Node just like the larger structures, and thus also spawns Infernal Furious Zombies when a player is in range and spreads Eerie biome. The node is contained in the top-most obsidian block.

Hilltop Stones

This obsidian structure looks similar to an Eldritch Ring on JourneyMap, but instead of banners and a floating obelisk it has a ring of small obsidian pillars decorated with vines. The center has a chest of loot and a Sinister Node. Below the block of obsidian the chest is on is a Wisp spawner, the only natural way to get Wisps outside of the Nether. All Wisps spawn Infernal and in combination with Furious Zombies from the node.

Witchery

Stone Circle

Stone Circles generate at high altitudes under open sky, accompanied by a Coven Witch. The center well has a hidden Dispenser with mineshaft table loot. Below two opposite diagonal corners of the well are a pair of Witch spawners, making this an excellent place to create a simple mob farm.

Wicker Man

A vaguely humanoid structure made of Hay Bales, Wicker Man structures are placed during world generation along with a ring of flowers and a single spawner below.

Biomes o' Plenty

Quicksand

This slightly darker golden yellow sand block is a natural trap. Entities in contact with quicksand cannot jump, are pulled downwards and significantly slowed. If the quicksand is only one block deep this is merely an annoyance, but two or more blocks can suffocate and kill. Keep a shovel at hand as it's the only way to quickly remove quicksand blocks. Quicksand is most common in desert biomes and lush jungles, where it's far easier to spot.

Poisonous Liquid

Pools of poisonous liquid only generate in SWAMP tagged biomes. They are easy to distinguish by the dull purple colour and blotchy surface pattern, except in Mystic Groves which have similar purple water that is harmless. Poison can be collected in a metal bucket, and is non-renewable. Contact inflicts Hunger and Poison debuffs.

Poison Ivy

This innocuous looking plant can be found rarely in most Biomes o' Plenty biomes with lots of trees. Poison Ivy blends in well amongst other ground cover sprites like grass and ferns. Any entity that comes into contact with it will be poisoned. It can be collected with shears, and occasionally emits green potion particles.
